History: Eiri is not the nicest person. No. He is not someone you would want to get in a physical or verbal fight with, he's too good at both of those sorts of battling.
So what and who is Uesugi 'Yuki' Eiri? He is a 22 year old romance novelist. He's devilishly good looking, with a tongue and personality that could poison a person with one bite. He makes it clear to everyone that he doesn't need them, and that he would prefer it they all left him alone. He's a heavy drinker, a chain smoker, sleeps with loads of woman, and loves to eat strawberry cakes. The poor young man hardly ever gets any sleep, he's too busy finishing his manuscripts to give to his editors.
But, you know, you would think a man so good at writing romance novels would be a softie at heart. Nope. He makes it clear that he finds love to be a useless emotion, though it's obvious this hardness is all a put on for his own protection. Eiri is terribly sensitive, though not all of the cruel coldness about him is an act. Much of it is in response to a lifetime of sensitivity.
Eiri was born in Kyoto, Japan. He's fully Japanese, but he was born with blonde hair (don't ask me how, please), and gold (?) eyes. He looked American. In fact, even Shuichi thought he was foreign until he started to speak. As a kid, Eiri was made fun of a lot, and that was one of the reasons that Tohma took him to New York where Eiri met a young Yuki Kitazawa, who would love him, and also ruin the rest of his life in one night of drunkenness. I won't spoil it here, just in case you're not there in the anime or manga, but if you want to read a spoilerfull explanation of Yuki Kitazawa and this incident, you have to read about Eiri's troubled past.
It's this very past that haunted Eiri still. So much so that Eiri has mental problems... yes, BIG ones. Like split personalities, heavy medication sort of mental problems. He can be very, very cruel to people, and doesn't often think twice to tell someone that he hates them. In most cases, I am sure this is not true, but he still says it regardless. When Eiri first comes into the Gravitation manga/anime, he is cold and emotionless. But Shuichi starts to get him, and we see Eiri break down little by little until he can no longer contain the flood of emotions coming from his wounded past.
So Eiri starts to smile, he starts to give in, all thanks to the effects of the bubbly and demanding Shuichi. Shuichi doesn't let Yuki brood, he's seemingly unaffected (well, for the most part) by Erir's cruelty, and won't run away even when Eiri is in the worst of moods. This is the sort of devotion no one has had for Eiri, and Eiri sees so much of his old lost innocence in Shuichi, that he is drawn to him... like it's gravitation (ha ha, i'm so witty) pulling at them. Everyone sees the change in Eiri, they tell him that he finally seems human.
Only, after years of holding all of these terrible memories back, Yuki finds that he is not so able to handle them. Given more drugs, Eiri is desperate to stop the blacking out and the alterations in his personality caused by the emotional trauma. The drugs only lead to him passing out, throwing up blood, and a bunch of other terrible things. This poor man, already so taken down by the world, is swamped with stress and anger. The drugs can't help him, he still can't get the thoughts of his Yuki Kitazawa out of his head, and he's scared to really let it all go.
Shuichi to the rescue! Or... maybe not. Loving the boy seems to do more harm than good. Even though Eiri is changing, the memories of what happened to him are flooding in. But, Eiri does commit his nicest act to date (even though he was previously forced to come out of the closet due to his brother and a cooking show)! He dresses in drag to go out on a date with Shuichi . The date doesn't go as planned, but Eiri does confide in Shuichi his troubled past. And little Shuichi takes it like a soldier. Good times, right? Things are looking up? Right? Wrong.
Tohma is still concerned for Eiri's health and orders Shuichi never to see Eiri. If he refuses, his contact with NG will be terminated. Tohma tells Shuichi that Eiri is his. As Eiri has always said, Tohma is a shark. He knows Tohma is serious, and agrees with him that Shuichi should get lost. Devastated, Shuichi finds himself kidnapped and taken to America. Without Yuki... will Shuichi stay?
When Eiri hears about Shuichi's kidnapping, he does another thing that surprises everyone! Goes to New York to get him! With an apology and all, Eiri admits to Shuichi that he knows he's not a good boyfriend, but he's trying, and he wants Shuichi back. Elated, Shuichi hops back to Tokyo to be with his Eiri. However, the poor cutie still can't get Eiri to admit that he loves him In fact, Eiri goes and makes things worse by telling Shuichi that he'll never love him because he loved Kitazawa Yuki, a dead man. But, after a traumatic encounter with the younger brother of Kitazawa Yuki, Eiri realizes what a great thing he has in Shuichi.
They're getting closer by the day, and Eiri is becoming a different person (already plenty established, I know ). He even agrees to help Shuichi write songs! Not something the pre-Shuichi Eiri would have ever done. When Shuichi refuses his help, Eiri's feelings are hurt even! He lashes out in a typical Eiri fashion and starts to treat Shuichi like crap again. His therapist tells him this is because he wants to be a part of Shuichi's life, and it bothers him to think that there's a part of Shuichi's life that he can't be an active member of. Eiri admits this is the truth. He goes to Shuichi, and much to the boy's shock, confesses this to him. Though he doesn't say the three words himself, he gives a "yes" when asked if this confession means he loved Shuichi.
The most heartless man in the world has learned how to love. It's a bit concerning, though. Even Shuichi has to admit that Eiri is just... acting too different from the Eiri he knows. That's not to say he doesn't like it, though. We have to take into consideration that maybe Eiri has healed from what happened between him and Kitazawa Yuki. He can't completely stop his personality, he has been changed by his past and therefore can't stop being the lovable jerk that he is. But, maybe accepting Shuichi's love has brought out a bit of the sweet boy that his family spoke of so fondly. The boy he was before Kitazawa Yuki betrayed him.
Most of all, it's cute to see how protective Eiri starts to become over Shuichi. He gets so angry when Tatsuha and K plan to frighten Shuichi up a bit that he goes into 'scary Eiri' mode and really freaks everyone out. Lucky Shuichi!
